The Day I Changed the World

The above title seems pretty impressive, especially since it was written by a girl who tends to wonder if her life has ever really accomplished much.  *Yes, I know I have done many things, and my life and experiences have made an impact whether I ever get to see the extent of that impact or not. However, that knowledge doesn’t keep the question of what fruit my life is bearing from crossing my mind on occasion.*

So, when’s the day I changed the world? Today. I am changing the world today.

Today is a busy enough day. I’m preparing to give five hours of lecture on identity and purpose for a discipleship training school on Thursday, working on music for a couple times of worship this week, sending my electronic ballot to vote in the US election, giving blood, and probably a few other things throughout the day.

How does anything on that list of activities change the world? It could be argued that casting a ballot in the US elections today might change the world. Giving blood can save a life and change the world of a family, community, and maybe even the world beyond depending on how that person chooses to spend his/her life.

In reality, any of the activities on my to-do list today have the potential to alter the course of history. The same goes for yours. We don’t usually get to see the outcome of all our actions or know about the lives we touch as we move through our days.

As my friend introduced me at the book launch last month, she joked that she looks forward to being invited to my album launch, wedding, and first movie premiere too. Looking back now, I laugh because, while I didn’t say it that night, I had written in my notes that my life will likely never be made into a Hollywood movie. (Sorry, Fiona, no movie premiere… But I’ll see what I can do about those other events.)

The great thing is we don’t have to be known by the world to change it. Our lives may not merit a Hollywood blockbuster, but they do make a difference. No matter what our lives look like to the world, heaven can look different because of how we live our stories. Living faithfully in our day-to-day lives, sharing our gifts with others and sharing God’s love, that is how we change the world and influence the landscape of eternity.

What’s on your to-do list today? Whom do you get to influence? How might eternity look different because of how you go about your activities? Today is the day we change the world.

“We don’t have to be known by the world to change it.” That is something to note and ponder on.
I think of theFairtrade movement, changing people’s lives by just changing shopping habits. Just an individual thing.
